According to a CP Secure-commissioned Amplitude Research(R) survey of 103 enterprise security decision makers and network administrators, anti-virus solutions across the board -- stand-alone appliances, network anti-virus software, desktop anti-virus software, and a combination of firewall and anti-virus appliance -- are far from protecting the enterprise against malicious content, forcing a majority of enterprise IT departments to live with vulnerabilities, contending with the aftermath of four or more outbreaks a year.
While 55% of the survey respondents said they have disconnected their network in response to a worm outbreak in 2004, 45.63% said they were 'somewhat satisfied' with their current anti-virus solution and 18.44% said they were 'very satisfied.'
"On the one hand, Enterprise security decision makers and network administrators were acknowledging how inconvenienced they were as a result of virus and worm outbreaks, and yet they were somewhat accepting of the current anti-virus solutions at their disposal," said Steve Birnkrant, CEO of Amplitude Research. "With 55% of all respondents saying that they have had to disconnect their network in response to a worm attack in 2004 and 29% of the respondents indicating that a virus or worm outbreak had a significant impact on their organization's ability to conduct business, can this really be 'as good as it gets'?"
When asked to identify the features of anti-virus solutions that enterprises would like to see improved, the respondents cited "faster virus pattern updates" and "internal detection of the virus source" as the most important.
Other findings of the survey included the following respondent information:
-- 63% said they had been attacked by traditional viruses
-- 63% said they had been attacked by worms, with 35% saying the threat of worms was 'very severe'
-- 58% said they had been attacked by Trojans
-- 45% said they had been attacked by backdoor viruses
-- 35% said they had experienced virus or worm outbreaks that were introduced internally
-- While 18.5% said they would not tolerate any network performance degradation for a virus-free environment, 29% said they would tolerate a 5% degradation, 26% a 10% degradation, 9.7% a 15% degradation, 7.76% a 20% degradation and 4.85% a 25% degradation.
The top four 'largest problems when the company is hit with a virus/worm outbreak' were:
-- Cleaning up infected desktops and servers (33%)
-- Containing the virus/worm outbreak (26.21%)
-- User complaints due to slow traffic (24.27%)
-- Disconnecting the web service, Internet connection etc. (14.56%)
"As a supplier of an anti-virus appliance featuring stream scanning technology -- an approach that contains capabilities that respondents in the survey indicated they would desire, CP Secure meets the challenges to fully protect enterprises in the fight against viruses and worms," said David Lu, CEO and Founder of CP Secure. "It's befuddling to see so many enterprises seemingly satisfied with the anti-virus approaches they currently use. Bottom line: When a superior, cost-effective approach exists, why tolerate vulnerability, inconvenience and accept threats that stop enterprises from conducting business?"
The survey was conducted over the period February 3, 2005 to February 4, 2005, with 103 completions. The margin of error was 9.64% at a 95% confidence level.
