Weather Underground, the nation's first online weather service, today announced the availability of a new online service at www.wunderground.com that displays all active wildland fires and associated smoke cover across the United States and Canada.
People can view the fire map at www.wunderground.com/wundermap/fire. Alternatively, one can navigate to it from the homepage by clicking on the WunderMap and selecting the Fire layer option.
Users can now scroll across the country and zoom in to view the precise location of fires in all areas of the US and Canada. One has the option to view recent historical fire and smoke cover data and check for weather conditions that may affect fire suppression efforts. Selecting the 'Weather Stations' layer of WunderMap will allow users to view current local conditions and forecasts provided by Weather Underground's unique and extensive network of personal weather stations.
"We have created this service for communities threatened by fire, and for people making travel plans this summer," said Alan Steremberg, President and co-founder of Weather Underground. "We have brought the service to market as quickly as possible in light of the many wildland fires currently burning across the country."
Using data from The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the product is a new layer to Weather Underground's WunderMap , the most user-friendly and interactive weather map on the Web. WunderMap is a visual display of weather layers that are plotted and overlaid on a map interface. Users can choose from a variety of layers including current conditions, animated radar, severe weather and tornado warnings, live webcam images and animated infrared or visible satellite imagery showing cloud coverage.
